I played Boggle, Jenga and Frustration with the neighbours at the weekend, while polishing off surplus cheese and biscuits from Xmas.

Hello new fish.

'Sgood

Your game of the year then, let's hear it.

1. Blue Revolver
"A textbook example of an indie shmup done well. An instant classic and easily my favourite game of the year.
Simple, satisfying, intuitive scoring. Bangin' chowns and a brave, unique aesthetic that looked horrible to me at first but which I now love.
A relatively easy 1cc on normal/novice but so much fun to play and score in, a sadistic "hyper" mode with yagawa style ranking that punishes you for playing well and a "parallel" mode which locks the game to the highest difficulty if you're a goddamn droid, and even a mission mode for new players learning the ropes.
A perfect "in" for new folk and a rare treat for genre veterans. Blue Revolver was not just the best shmup of 2016, indie or otherwise, it was the best game of 2016!"

2. Leap of Fate
"A very, very close second. Criminally overlooked top down shooter roguelike with loads of replay value, think "the binding of isaac" with streamlined ARPG combat. 4 characters that play very differently, really fun combat and polished presentation."

3. Overwatch
"The online shooter that got me back into online shooters (for a few months).
I don't think I need to go into too much detail with this one as everyone knows it. An excellent, strategic hero shooter that encourages, nay, demands teamwork. If you have the time and the energy to invest in it, it gives a lot back and you feel amazing when everything is flowing."

4. Enter The Gungeon
"A slower paced, more strategic twin stick shooter roguelike. Hard but fair, with a fun "loads of silly guns" gimmick. Up there with the best of the genre"

5. Stardew Valley
"Gorgeous, colourful, relaxing timesink farming game in the vain of animal crossing/harvest moon. You can milk cows, twat slimes, ride horses, enable alcoholics, that sort of thing."

6. Killing Floor 2
"Like killing floor but better looking. A sort of co-op arena, wave-based shooter version of left 4 dead."

7. Flamebreak
"A very streamlined, slower paced, more strategic top-down shooter/ARPG with nice roguelike mechanics.
Pitch perfect difficulty with a nice drip feeding of new skills and challenges.
Urges you to play random builds with different characters, weapons and skills, some more powerful than others but all great fun to play."

8. American Truck Simulator
"Like Euro Truck Simulator but more american. It's "sim" in name only. You don't have to read a yellow pages sized manual before playing. It's the perfect "zone out" whilst listening to podcasts or music game."

9. Space Moth DX
"Another great indie shmup from last year. Has a lovely, hypnotic, trancey, laid back feel to it and a really good scoring mechanic where you "soul drain" larger enemies by hitting them with your wide/rapid shot until they turn black, and then finish them off with your laser to score higher.
soul drained enemies become more aggressive, firing out more bullets, so it's a lovely risk/reward system.
A lot of bullets home in on you in this game so you can't just be flying all over the screen, you have to stand still when you need to.
Nice bright, chunky, primary coloured graphics and some great, tricky bosses"

10. Cashtronauts
"A compulsive twin stick asteroid-mining rogue-like set in procedurally generated space with a brilliant "risk" system where at the start of the game, you can choose to enable any or all of 10 different scenarios to make the game more difficult in return for a higher percentage of profit.
One risk makes your armour weak so only one hit can be taken. Another adds gold to some asteroids but also adds competition in the form of big mining ships.
The game eases you in gently, the 10 risks are unlocked as you play, letting you add more challenge as you get more confident.
You have a starting area which includes an ammo and fuel shop, a shop to sell minerals to, a place for upgrading your ship parts and a police station which rewards cash-monies for any teeth you bring them as proof of a baddy bashed.
From here, you go out exploring space, blowing up asteroids to find juicy minerals to sell on for profit, searching for cash crates, ship upgrades to beef up your engines and weapons and bad lads who drop teeth and cash on death.
Blasting benign civilian ships into space dust and collecting their cash and hopefully ship upgrade parts will set off a GTA style wanted state where police will chase you around the starting area until it wears off.
The starting screen shows your own personal high score and the highest score from around the world for that day which spurs you on to have "just one more shot".

Based on hours played then, I think the Derision, I mean Division was mine. Bullet sponge nightmare that it was. First game bought when back on the XBone.

Didn't really really enjoy anything all that much*. Did two thirds of Doom and then couldn't be arsed. Did Watch_Dogs 2 because I'm the only person on the planet who rated the first one (mission design only), but it was only better because San Fancisco is nice. Quite liked X-COM 2 but was that 2015?

*Ooh, ooh, I tell a lie - played Human: Fall Flat with the boy on couch co-op and we laughed til we couldn't breathe. :D Recommended if you have any friends.

He got very into Overwatch too.

I built a house in Skyrim, but I don't expect anyone to care. I could probably say that I adopted a young child, murdered her and defiled her festering corpse, but no one would give a Dickie!
Hello little doggy,
My, you are a nice dog,
What did you just say then?
You could do some tricks! Oh, good, then will you show me?
My word that's a good one!
Would you like a cigarette?
No you can't, they're bad for you!

Usually a first post would be about Cardiacs. This isn't a games forum, you know!
