MARESNEST SCREEN RATIO?

Postby lish » Tue Apr 03, 2012 17:24

I am curious as to which screen ratio was used on the maresnest video? It isnt 4.3 as on an old 4.3 TV you get black bars top and bottom. I also get black bars when watching it on my new 16.9 TV and get it on all the screen ratio setting apart from "True Widescreen" which is inactive for some reason?...

16:9 scaled down to fit into 4:3 so there are black bars at the top and bottom.

Here's the original 4:3

and here it is cropped to 16:9

Probably just because everyone had 4:3 TVs back then they just shrunk it down, better than blowing it up, reducing quality and losing the sides of the picture.

I expect when they release the DVD/BluRay (at some point in the future) it may be 16:9.
Hello little doggy,
My, you are a nice dog,
What did you just say then?
You could do some tricks! Oh, good, then will you show me?
My word that's a good one!
Would you like a cigarette?
No you can't, they're bad for you!

Was this originally filmed to be on 16:9 TV's one day. I still think it was only ever going to be 4:3 full frame.

Probably just an aesthetic choice, give it a nice cinematic look and feel.
Lish, just watch it in 4:3 aspect ratio and zoom in until it fills the screen.

Back in 1990, shooting something like Maresnest with widescreen in mind would've been pretty unlikely. In fact, I think up until the late nineties people were still just putting black bars at the top and bottom of a 4:3 image to give a kind of faux-film effect.
Some consider childish dreams a matter of necessity

If it ever makes it to DVD or Blu-Ray then I hope whoever edits/remasters it puts it to true 16.9 so it fills the TV screen...

That's exactly what I don't want to happen. If they digitally enhance the picture to fill a 16:9 screen, then picture information will be lost elsewhere. I'd rather have 4:3 full frame.

I don't understand the obsession of having stuff fill the entire screen when it was originally full frame. Anyway, use your 'stretch' button.

I agree it seems unlikely that it was shot at 16:9, very unlikely.
Shame there isn't a full frame version. I'm sure their current master would be this 16:9 picture in a 4:3 frame.
Tbh, depending on what their master actually is, blowing it up really wouldn't make a hugely appreciable difference to the quality.

I'm with you on this one dr terror.I don't understand why it bugs people if there are black bars? Surely you want the picture to be most realistic rather than enhanced. If they are saying its because it make it too small then surely a bigger tv (as most of us have now ) means that the picture is not to small.

Anyways we are all dreaming of a new version....maybe if we are all good little boys and girls we may get for christmas :)

Maybe the picture wouldn't improve that much, but the sound quality could be great on blu-ray. Cardiacs in 24bit 96khz audio, yes please..
