On the flip side, could this band Atoms For Peace be common tealeaves? This sounds like Radiohead doing 'Let Alone My Plastic Doll'. A bit.

It sort of is, its Thom Yorke on vocals (with Flea from Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich in the band too), and first time I heard it my ears pricked up, those synth-y bits do sound like Let Alone...

The first time I heard The Whole World Window it reminded me of this old Procol Harum shanty :

Still does, a bit. Lovely, lovely songs, both.

Someone on Cardiacs FB page spotted this 1984 XTC gem :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVsH_ZlTv0A
I recorded the opening, sped the tempo up about 30% and raised the pitch two semi tones, and voila : Fiery Gun Hand!
Nothing wrong with having XTC as an influence. In fact one of the things I love about Cardiacs is spotting the little musical nods and homages Tim slips in... never mind all the lyric Pilfering from old hymns, poems and Moby Dick!
cheers

Speaking of him... I just came across that old post.
Snardbafulator wrote:Speaking of early Genesis, for the sake of making this post only slightly less useless and self-indulgent (nods to schlep) than a correction, I can't resist noting that the intensely dissonant, non-diatonic chord progression in the Mellotron/organ outchorus of "Return of the Giant Hogweed" from Nursery Cryme seems to have served as some kind of template for the development of an important aspect of Tim Smith's harmonic language. Anyone else notice resemblances to the staccato chord sections of "The Duck and Roger the Horse" and "A Horse's Tail," not to mention other strikingly dissonant/out of mode chordal movements all throughout Cardiacs music?

Another one for the swipe file! I was just listening to "Faith Healer" by the Sensation Alex Harvey Band, and the opening line caught my ear - "If your body's feeling bad/and it's the only one you've had..."
