Random fortune-cookie writings:

I've been listening to StG, all day, on and off. Not my favorite Cardiacs, just because it is such a great big and multifaceted thing.

It demands a lot from the listener. Going from quiet subtle sounds, to noise and chaos, pure pop to speed metal, with layers upon layers of things jostling for space in your eardrums all the time; it's hard to pay attention.
That said, there are big rewards for paying attention, every time out.

It's everything about this great, contradictory band, writ large. Maybe it's for God to understand.

It has got to be the most impressive Cardiacs album(s) - even after many many umpteens of listens, it won't settle down!

Yep. I literally haven't gone more than 2 days without listening to it at least once. Simply incredible. It baffles me. Some of the songs (Dirty Boy, Insect Hooves, Firey Gun Hand, Dog Like Sparky, Odd Even) are better than most band's entire careers.

I wish i had been around to look forward to it's release, then hear all those tunes for the first time in one sitting. I envy all of you who were already followers at that point.

It's probably my favourite Cardiacs album.. although i find it hard to compare with an album like The Seaside.. both have their distinct qualities. as for Sing To God seeming intimidating, i'd agree with that, even after you've listened to the album many times and enjoy it its something i just can't handle in certain moods.. atleast not the whole album at one time, its not what i'd call casual listening.. though there are songs that are fun to throw on randomly.. Odd Even is an absolutely perfect pop song.. Dirty Boy is great when my mind needs a good raking.. 8)

Oh, just the ongoing conversation one has with oneself, in this case at 4:15 with whisky and yet another attempt at doing a chronologically reversed sampler for someone. I can still only get it down to six StG tracks minimum. No recollection of posting.

I've had fun tracking the progression of certain songs - Nurses Whispering Verses shows up as one the very earliest tunes, and was done again and again until they arrived at this, the very ultimate version that could be done by but a man.

Tim is the very definition of a perfectionist, and I love him for it.

Agree with you there, I usually favor one version or the other but all of them are great in their own rights and also show how the band was sounding at the time ! When I first heard the track live back in the late 80's I thought it was a new track and was like ...what the hell is that its awesome. Then managed to borrow a tape with it on and loved it :)
