Songs For Ships and Irons

Postby schlep » Thu Sep 14, 2006 16:45

I've been listening to this one all week - my second ever Cardiacs joint.
I love the one-two punch of 'Big Ship' then 'Tarred and Feathered' to start off with.
Just at the moment I was marvelling at the part of "Too Many Irons..." when Tim starts singing
There's toomany irons in the fire/
Too man-ny ir-ons in the fire/ etc., speeding up then stopping short - just fvcking brilliant.
It's like (for instance) bits of Beatles songs that make perfect sense, you can't imagine it being done any other way.
Anyone else like this album much?

Been playing this this afternoon - love it. It's actually a compilation but you wouldn't think so. All His Geese Are Swans is one of my fave dreamy Cardiacs moments - such a lifting piece of music...

Really really love it all apart from All Spectacular which irritates me for some reason, and Plane Plane Against the Grain which just sounds silly!!

They were released as:

Big Ship (ALPH 004)
Side A
1. Big Ship
2. Tarred and Feathered
Side B
3. Burn Your House Brown
4. Stoneage Dinosaurs
5. Plane Plane Against the Grain

There's Too Many Irons.........(ALPH 006)
Side A
1. There's Too Many Irons in the Fire
2. All Spectacular
Side B
3. Loosefish Scape Grace

Blind in Safety and Leafy in Love is on the B-Side of: Susannah's Still Alive (ALPH 009)

I'm not sure where Everything is Easy and All His geese are Swans are from? Unless they are off the 12" version of Susannah?

:)

All Spec. sounds like a good old sea shantey to me.
Plane Plane is a little silly, but it doesn't overstay its welcome at a minute fifteen!

Actually listening to Plane. Plane last night - it occurs to me that you can make the experience even sillier if you imagine Mr. Smith singing it in 17th century type attire - powdered wig, waistcoat, frilly shirt.

\that's all I've got, this morning

Yeah, I put down All Spectacular as well, along with about 20 others. And then put "and anything else within reason". So pretty similar really.

I really love that song, it's one of those deceptively simple ones - love to see them do it like on Maresnest.
