Maybe enthusiasm got the better of me... I'll have to listen very carefully to the lot...

Piffol -- the hidden truth

Postby Fremmed » Sun Jul 10, 2011 23:49

Check out what our keyboard player discovered...

First, heres a small outtake lifted straight out of Piffol One time: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3ZLWH2F4

And then, here's that same outtake, in reverse: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A4K9JRBK

I wasn't expecting that...

Blimey, it's Visiting Hours! That's a bit spooky. I know they used to do a similar thing at early gigs where they'd play the riff from "Nurses" backwards, but this, as the kidz with a zed say, is some other level shit.

Has your keyboard player tried it with any of the other Piffols yet?

Nah, I had a quick listen to the rest of the Piffols in reverse (as did Gunnar) without anything obvious popping out. BTW, reverse listening is nothing I normally do - it was more of an accident during rehersal ... :-)

That blew me away. I know I don't have much of a clue when it comes to composition and songwriting, but to me, these young guys, as they were, creating tunes like that just leaves me in (even more) awe.

That's really funny. I was listening to Piffol One Time with a friend a few months ago and commented how that part sounded like a proto-Visiting Hours. Didn't think it actually was.

Hmm, I have to disagree there. It seems to my ears that only One and Five have an actual recurring theme. And Six doesn't really sound like any of the others.

Anyway, I've put them all together(including Five & Six) in a zip, with a little bit of speed/volume tweaking:

I picked up a file of all six in the pond a few days ago. they're great, but there is a bit of an error in part 6 around 0:22. It might be a problem with the source tape though. Does your version have this error too? If not I would love if you could reupload "aloadofpiffol". :)

Here's a version of Piffol Six Times without the error:

*link removed, better version below*

I nabbed the audio from Gehenna's video (114 kbps, jeezus...), converted it to a Wav, did a bit of subtle mastering and volume adjustment, and saved it as a 192 kbps mp3.

It is, naturally, a different length and pitch to the version in the "a load of Piffol" folder, but as this new version comes from Gehenna I'm inclined to accept this one as the more accurate one...

I may be wrong though.

The version I used was from the "Cardiacs Rarities" bootleg, which had quite a few tape dropouts unfortunately. I was only really guessing as to what speed everything should be to match, and I'm still not sure I got it exact, but I still think Gehenna's video versions are running a tad too slow.

...with this in mind, I've pitch-corrected Gehenna's copy and spliced the missing bit into your copy, and uploaded it here:

It's not perfect, but it's better than a dropout :)

I'm confused... I just finished listening to the version Pheeel uploaded and I thought it was fine. Where was the tape dropout?

...The link in my last post is Pheel's Piffol Six Times from his "aloadofpiffol" collection, but with a little bit of Gehenna's version surgically added to make the patient whole again.

oh, whoops, when I said "the version Pheeel uploaded" I meant "the version brother abnego uploaded", as in this one: http://www.sendspace.com/file/dsen59

is the one you uploaded today with a spliced in piece meant to be an upgrade on what you posted yesterday?
