The snare drums especially sound like samples, in their repeated uniformity. (Machines is good tho! Mebbe I'm wrong tho.) :?

i agree the snare sounds overly even in places, but i'm putting that down to the snare having quite a chunky tone, often being high in the mix and compressed, and lots of close mic vs. room sound (cymbals are very quiet).

the drums are mechanical in places, again i would say that is just because that's how cardiacs drummer are - very locked down to support all the surrounding craziness. there are also some quite "human" moments too...?

Think there was a theory on the forum saying that On Land And In The Sea was part samples, part "real" drumming.

Can't find the thread though.

True. I sent an email directly to Tim back in 2007... he answered that those were "80% programmed and 20% real" and then he added "hey, those were the fvcking eighties!" :D

Dominic also confirmed me this story on myspace (mail lost)

but, y'know, it doesn't matter, of course. i have plenty of favourite drummers, but favour the use of programming in my own writing, and, cardiacs' music has never been in itself about the drummer aspect (though bob = awesome) - it's rather about tim's writing (and william's, and jon's...) the seaside version of 'a wooden fish on wheels', and the piffols, and etc etc etc just fookin *rock* 8)

I'm pretty sure that technique went on into the 90s. But it's done so well to be indistinguishable amongst everything else going on, and the songs are too killer to be fussy :)

Sing to God is programmed from a box of Bob samples.

I thought they were available in The Pond.
Hello little doggy,
My, you are a nice dog,
What did you just say then?
You could do some tricks! Oh, good, then will you show me?
My word that's a good one!
Would you like a cigarette?
No you can't, they're bad for you!

Links have expired I think

These are the 6, as posted by Brother Abnego last year
(assuming, that Piffol 2 is TVTV, which is still debateable)

Piffol 1
Piffol 2
Piffol 3
Piffol 4
Piffol 5
Piffol 6
And if she only had stopped making that hissing noise . . .

...and you'll also be wanting this version of Piffol 6 Times:

...which is exactly the same as the copy of Piffol 6 in the above collection, but with the annoying dropout repaired with a crafty splice from elsewhere in the same recording :)

First, heres a small outtake lifted straight out of Piffol One time: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3ZLWH2F4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And then, here's that same outtake, in reverse: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A4K9JRBK" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I wasn't expecting that...

Blimey, it's Visiting Hours! That's a bit spooky. I know they used to do a similar thing at early gigs where they'd play the riff from "Nurses" backwards

WOW, I´m totally speechless. I mean, I already hailed him as genius composer, but THIS is so genius I´m totally baffled, almost shocked. And I´m not kidding! Now it would be interesting to know if he did it on other songs too...
