The last chorus of that song is so euphoric, they leave it just a millisecond too long before dropping into it and it's just stunning. Brilliant!

That song is a close relative to Dog Like Sparky to my ears.Biggest and most joyful chorus evarrr1111!.

Ever wondered what pissed Timbo off so much at the very end of it?

"What the f**k are you doing??!!"

Or Jim might have let a furtive smile curl the corners of his upper lip.

Hmn..because it's sort of blank, it doesn't suggest or evoke anything much. Things that shoot bullets.
There's references to guns in other Cardiacs songs, Fiery Gun Hand obviously, Two Bites of Cherry...

The thing I wonder about Timmy most is what he thinks about what he does.

Does he have a grand plan? Does everything he writes and say have genuine hidden meaning behind it, so complicated we cannot even begin to understand?

Or is he just doing it for the sake of it, David Byrne style? Either way I'm happy :D

Poor Guns. As a complete newcomer to Cardiacs I got all their albums at exactly the same time and could therefore judge them simultaneously. Guns has done remarkably well for itself out of this process. In fact, I'd rate it a very narrow second behind Sing To God. I guess the newer line-up appeals to me more...

But yeah, I'm guessing it's their shortest album, and it's the concise summation of strengths to counterpoint STG's blaze of never-ending glory. Also has some of their best tunes. It's a winner! It also has nary a weak track, although if pushed, I'd suggest 'Cry Wet Smile Dry', 'Jitterbug', 'Clean That Evil Mud Out Of Your Soul' and 'Signs' as the highlights. Oh but it's all so good! Argh...

'Will Bleed Amen' first,
'Come Back Clammy Lammy' second,
'Theres Good Cud' third...

...cack, I'm still locked into Stoneage's poll frenzy...

Spell With A Shell still baffles me!
It's like a racehorse that only runs backwards, and still wins the race.

Jim's bass is more like a lead instrument on Guns.

It's complicated music, even more than Sing To God. The way Tim welded the words onto the tunes is all rhythmically weird and 'incorrect', nothing comes down the way you're used to with pop music. You have to adapt yourself to it, even more than other Cardiacs albums! Does this make sense? I need a beer to clear my head.
Still my favorite, for no reason I could explain!

For an answer to my earlier question, why is it called Guns? I look at cardiacs.com and read the following blurb (has this changed recently? Is something moving? I don't remember seeing all this before...)

Guns…the perfect companion to ‘Sing To God’.
Cardiacs extend the blueprint ever outwards with a 12 song colossus, bursting with brilliance, fire, and beauty. Guns… the last album of the Jon Poole-era line up, swims reedier rivers than Cardiacs have previously ventured into. Won’t you become enchanted in the warmth of the ghostly ‘Jitterbug’? Paint a star on your
beautiful cheek and stomp with the weeds to ‘Sleep All Eyes Open’?
Powerfully revolve your pretend Stetson to ‘There’s Good Cud’?
Or FRUG like an insane to ‘Will Bleed Amen’?

Shoot a silver bullet into your fvcking mind and repeat the mantra…

Guns…Magnificently intolerable…
Guns…Wild and eerie…an album spattered with ghosts…
Guns…A voyage below the pond…
Guns…The haunted bullet that will NOT be removed…
Guns…Shooting up your mind cells…
Guns…Barking and Hollering..
