Fiery Gun Hand cover - with a comment from Tim

Postby chaffinch » Sun Feb 10, 2013 04:24

Another great acapella cover from David Minnick (a few of his others have been posted on here previously I think). One of the comments posted is apparently from Tim Smith himself - I almost fell off my chair (well, couch).

Arch Garrison Hello, Tim Smith here. I have just been played Fiery Gun Hand by Craig out of NSRO and it knocked my block off. Just saying is all. Thank you.

This made me extremely happy as well, mainly because it is (seems to be) from the man's own mouth (fingers?). We had other people solemnly informing us about the state of his health for so long that it almost made him seem perhaps even more incapacitated than he actually is. But here is Tim himself again, talking to us and sharp as day, although he now has to look for his block which had been knocked off.

And both the fiery gun hand and Lassie acapellas are absolutely groovy. Mr Minnick is a genius of his own kind!

Hi Sterbus,

Being still in the "How on earth am I going to do this?" phase of working on Dirty Boy, I have even more respect for your version than I did before! It's really a difficult song to even conceptualize doing a cover of...much less complete one...much less complete a really good one! Your version is great!! However, it's on Sing to God so I've gotta do it (it's the LAST of the 8 minute+ songs that I have to do!). It'll be a lot of time and probably a few scrapped versions before I can finish it.

Oh, thank you for your kind words... I was joking when I said that my "kingdom was about to end" :? but I'm really convinced you're going to do a great work with that epic song!
I remember when I first heard that song in late 2006, and it took me four whole years before I managed to imagine how to do it... I just knew from the start that I wanted to do it more acoustic and laid-back... clearly the main "problem" is: how can I keep high the interest for so much time?

But I'm so proud that in the end - january 2010! - I did it, it's my tribute to the man that - probably more than zappa - changed my way to imagine songwriting.... so, good luck ! :D
