Re: Major Parkinson

Agree with Chaffinch AGAIN. MP are clearly influenced by Cardiacs (I read a recent interview where they cheerled our boys!) but have their own thing. Really, really love the new album. Loads of stuff on youtube. I don't particularly like the vocals but I don't actually like Tim's vocals much either ...

Re: Major Parkinson

Twilight Cinema is utterly brilliant. In my all time top ten already. Proggier and even more mental than their first two. Melody and massively diverse instrumentation a-plenty. Cannot recommend it enough! "The Wheelbarrow" reminds me of "Buds and Spawn" in it pace and melodies bu...

Re: Your Most Important Taste-Shaping Album

Good thread. I love me early Genesis, probably coz I got into them years after everything else (years post-Cardiacs for eg). I rank them as my 2nd fave band. As for shape-tasting music...mine was Queen's Greatest Hits at age 8 or 9. Yes ffs. Then I collected all their albums and still love Queen II....

Re: Favourite Albums

Yay! Lists! Ok, here are mine. Albums I love and will always go back to like a smelly pillow. Shudder to Think "Pony Express Record" Genesis "Selling England.." Schumann's 4th Symphony Ride "Going Blank Again" VDGG "Pawn Hearts" Queen "Queen II" Aime...

Re: Dutch Uncles

Another great recommend Ady! I think it was you who turned me on to Major Parkinson; the best Cardiacs-influenced band out there these days. Thanks again. Dutch Uncles are really good aren't they? Hope they make it big whilst retaining their quirkiness.

These videos are great. Even better than the recordings. They should be showered with fame and money much like our heroes of yore should have been. Oh well, not to worry, our alien overlords of the year 325000AD will utter them in the same breath as Beethoven and the like.

Re: Split Enz

By first two albums, I mean "Mental Notes" and Dizrhytmia". The one in between was mostly (bad) re-recordings of Mental Notes songs. I think Mental Notes is a great album and certainly a prog classic, with probably the weirdest pop song ever in "Stranger than Fiction". Sadly...

Re: Voivod

Funny that. I have been listening to nothingface quite a lot recently. I never really listen to metal but that album is just sublime. It's amazing how it never gets dull after multiple listens. I've had it for over 20 years goddammit. I'll give the new one a go on your recommendation. Thanks!

Re: Prog dinosaurs

A Passion Play is ace. The 5-10 minutes on Side 2 after the rubbish spoken word bit, is perhaps my fave slab of music. As for staid crowds for TAAB, I'm expecting this. Japanese audiences are silent between songs, which can be really eerie at times. I saw MBV the other month and you could hear a pin...

In the next few months I am seeing Jethro Tull and Genesis live! If this was 1973, I'd be fvcking damn cool. However, it's not. I'm actually seeing Ian Anderson do TAAB and then Steve Hackett doing "Genesis Revisited" both in Tokyo. I hope it's going to be good. I figured it was my first a...

Re: Rank Cardiacs members by historical importance

I got into Cardiacs just after Sarah and Tim Quy left. The first gig I saw was at New Cross with a five-piece of Tim, Jim, Bill, Dominic and Bic. It was Bill's last or penultimate gig and everyone already knew he was leaving. I was gutted he was leaving as I saw the keyboards as the main instrument ...

Re: Brothers From Another Mother...

Post-Cardiacs, the most Cardiacsy band I've come across are Major Parkinson. But they are unique as well and full of good chooooons. It's just that they give me the same vibe as Cardiacs. Short songs chock-full of quality shit 'n that.
(Apologies for using the term "Post-Cardiacs"....)

Re: Major Parkinson

Haven't posted on here for ages...but this lot are fvcking ace. They love Cardiacs but aint no rip-off. Both their albums so far are excellent. Chock-block with melody, weirdness and quality musicianship. Well worth checking out if you haven't yet. My fave tracks are "Heart of Hickory" and...
